How can we not talk about Ushuaia, which represents something so special, especially for the French! Some will be disappointed, others will literally fall under its spell.

End of the World Lighthouse in Ushuaia

The geographical location is incredible and the place is absolutely beautiful. The arrival by plane is spectacular: after flying over the cordillera, a dive is obligatory through the clouds, to discover this natural setting at the end of the world… It’s also the only place in Argentina where you are on the other side of the Cordillera de los Andes without being in Chile. It must be said that here more than elsewhere, in Tierra del Fuego, the borders follow rather hazardous lines…

Welcome to Ushuaia

Ushuaia is nestled in a mountainous basin opening onto Ushuaïa Bay, at the foot of the Andes, to the north of a canal with a mythical name: the Beagle Channel. Opposite, on the horizon, is Chile, with the islands of Navarino and Hoste and the military base of Puerto Williams. Chilean patrol boats and submarines are sometimes visible when we get closer to Chilean waters… Here more than elsewhere, the borders are fragile.

To the east stand the majestic peak of Olivia and the massif of the Five Brothers “Los Cinco Hermanos”. The colors are even more beautiful, especially at dawn when the sun begins to warm this end of the world. I especially recommend a little sailboat trip on the Beagle Channel to get in the mood.

From an architectural point of view, Ushuaïa is extremely heterogeneous. The wooden houses from the beginning of the 20th century have a Scandinavian feel: corrugated iron roofs, brightly painted walls and contoured ornaments.

The Tierra del Fuego National Park is also one of the emblematic parks of Argentina where the presence of beavers will surprise you… Here again, as in many other places on our planet, the stupidity human has wreaked havoc and unfortunately it is not over…

But Ushuaïa also has hikes that are among the most beautiful in Patagonia. Here you will be between sea, mountains and lakes. And, in the evening, typical meals of the region await you, such as the famous spider crab “centolla” (Patagonian king crab).

Then, Ushuaïa is the starting point for a journey even further south: Cap Horn of course, and Antarctica. If you want to know more, I invite you to also read an article about Ushuaia …

Go to the ends of the world!
