I recommend you as well as suggest you visit the South of Bolivia as a kind of extension from the Northeast of Argentina and/or the North of Chile near San Pedro of Atacama. Without a doubt, my favourite place in this part of the world. Bolivia might be my favourite country in South America...
For a more intimate and human visit I recommend you the Central Andes. In the heart of the vast Bolivian altiplano, at a great altitude (3,600 mts average), live the most indigenous people of South America, wandering around volcanoes and deserts with their flocks of llamas and alpacas. Each community is different, having its own customs, music and art.
This place also gives you the feeling of infinite solitude where a person seems to have no place whatsoever, due to the amazing range of mineral colours...
It can also be seen all kinds of volcano manifestations (such as enormous volcanoes, geysers, fields of lava), the white, blue, green, yellow, red salt lakes, and it can also be perceived a very high altitude in which the flora, fauna and man have adapted themselves in a very particular way.
Often compared to Tibet desert, Sur Lipez is located in the Bolivian altiplano at 4000 mts above sea level. On the other side of the mountain range it is situated the Atacama Desert, with lower altitude but much more arid. You can delight yourself watching deserts beyond compare with huge salt flats. One of the salt flats is Uyuni, the highest and vastest all around the world (12,000 km2 – one time and a half the size of Corcega!). It is surrounded by active as well as passive volcanoes, colourful small lakes with an exceptional aquatic fauna, fumaroles, geysers – what highlights an eminent presence of vulcanism.
A truly sublime region in our planet.
In addition to this area, I recommend, if you have time, to visit the cities of Potosi and Sucre.
In 1987 UNESCO designated Potosi a World Heritage site.
Sucre, supreme for its baroque art and the renaissance, is the most European city in Bolivia and, beyond doubt, one of the most beautiful in Latin America.
From the architectural point of view, Sucre still looks as a postcard from the XIX century, what gives it a special charm.
Sucre is considered the most beautiful city in Bolivia.
Patagonia in all seasons menu. For example, according to the climate, from Bariloche, in Patagonia Argentina, it is possible to go to Puerto Montt, in Chile, crossing successively three lakes by boat, as did the Jesuits and the first German settlers. I offer a tour that leads to the Pacific Ocean. It is quite long, but the beauty of the sites - forests, volcanoes and crystalline lakes - is such that it is worth to be carried. The Argentine side, cross the west arm of Nahuel Huapi and Lake Puerto Alegre and, the chilen side, Lake Todos los Santos. Moving from one lake to another by bus. This tour is feasible in all seasons, but in winter, it takes two days to reach Puerto Montt, stopping for one night at Peulla. We returned to Bariloche by air or by the same way, after a night in Puerto Montt. Borispatagonia is also responsible for visas to go to Chile and to book hotels. In Patagonia, winter and summer are tourist seasons. In summer, besides explore the surrounding, many activities are available: climbing, torrent fishing, sailing, horseback riding, hiking, rides, visits to Aciendas... In winter, the main activity is, of course, skiing, especially in July and August on the side of the Andes, but not only: snowshoe hikes, thematic tours, many walks to admire the beauty of Patagonia Argentina and Chile in this season, due a unique light, the warmth of the people of Patagonia... Just to talk about, I get goose bumps!
