Carnivals and Traditions

Are you eager to see and dance to some folklore?? For lovers of music, dance, costumes and for those who wish to travel with a rhythm, I propose a thematic programme, made to measure. Argentina is a country with music in its soul. Regions in the north and north west live to the ryhthm of the carnival, especially during January and February. In Chile, the island of Chiloé in the north, and the famous "Tapati" on Easter Island offer you a spectacular, colourful and unique experience.

Here you can find further information through an example.

Día de la Tradición Chile - Tapati Carnival Buenos Aires - Murgas
Provinces of Salta and Jujuy - Carnaval

| Duration : 1 day or more.

| The carnivals in the North Western part of Argentina take place in the districts of Jujuy (esp in "la Quebrada de Hamahuaca") and Salta (esp in theLerma valley). Many other places in these districts do organise some - minor - festivals at the same period.
The main two episodes of the festivities are the disclosure and burial of the devil. The devils are disclosed before the beginning of the ceremony. When enverything is over, all the people walk down the hill singing songs, bombarding each other with water, flour, and streamers. The "temptation Sunday" marks up the end of the festivities, with the burial of the Devil, who'll recover his hiding place with his coca leaves, alcohol and cigarettes to help him live one more year.

Chile - Tapati Carnival
carnavals argentine chili

| Start point Hanga Roa.

| Duration Few day.

| 1975. Back then, it was a song and poetry festival organized to attract tourists. Today's sophisticated productions feature native dance, chant, and song, and competitions such as horse racing, woodcarving, fishing, kai kai (string figures), traditional body decoration, a parade, and a queen contest. The festival has become so popular that it has now been extended into a two-week event. Tapati occurs at the height of the Summer season, usually at the end of January and the first of February. The dance and song performances generally are held in the island's gymnasium but many are also out of doors, in front of one or another of the great ahu platforms, such as at Tongariki or Tahai. Some of these are more like "dance-drama" performances. An example would be the recreation of the first landing of Hotu Matu'a, enacted at Anakena or Ovahe beach, by torchlight. A few of the sports competitions, such as spear fishing, have drawn Polynesians from other parts of the Pacific who come to test their skills. Since the filming of a Hollywood movie that was made on the island in 1993, the festival events have taken on a more sophisticated gloss. This is particularly evident in the parade that occurs near the end of the festival. The parade features decorated floats, each bearing a queen contestant, and accompanied by supporters dressed in native costumes, singing and dancing by torchlight along the parade route. As the movie encouraged the girls who were participating in it to bare their breasts, some women now appear topless in the parade.

Carnival of Gualeguaychu

| Start point : Gualeguaychu.

| Duration : few days.

| During the months of January and February, the City of Gualeguaychú dresses up to present one of the most expected shows in the area: the Carnival of the Country, which summons thousands of enthusiasts that enjoy the brightness, the joy, the thrill and the rhythm of the comparsas (social club's carnival dance group) parading before them at the local corsódromo (carnival runway). During the Carnivals of Gualeguaychú, all the attendants experiment and feel the true sense of this majestic festival, getting rid of the social and cultural hindrances that structure modern society. In this issue, the Carnival of the Country will present the comparsas Marí-Marí, Kamarr and Papelitos, which will compete for the first prize as they display the quality of their costumes, the synchrony of their choreography and the great show made up by their floats which, in addition to the themes chosen by the directors, make attendants vibrate and dance as they try to leave a legacy to make the world a better place. This artistic display has been around for over twenty years and is considered one of the most important carnival parades on earth, along with the carnivals of Rio de Janeiro and Venice.

« Día de la Tradición »
carnavals argentine chili

| Duration : Few days.

| The Día de la Tradición is a national holiday throughout Argentina on the 10th November, but San Antonio de Areco is really the place to be if you can find a place to stay. As the centre of celebrations, the town draws foreign tourists and Argentines alike from all corners, and is usually packed out all week. It’s a slap-up feast of a festival, an orgy of indulgement, a near-parody of all that Argentines love, and love to boast about, not just in the rural corners of the pampa but throughout the cities and the capital itself. The central character in all the action is the gaucho, and to really appreciate the meat, the dancing, the handkerchief-waving and equestrian acrobatics you’ll need to bone up on a bit of the history of this rough, tough, real man of a man. If you're in Buenos Aires, pop along to the Feria de Mataderos to see him in Sunday-afternoon style action. The yearly festival of the Día de la Tradición usually takes place the weekend before the 10th November, but do confirm this nearer the time as it is postponed to the following weekend in case of rain.

Chile – Chiloe island
carnavals argentine chili

| Duration : Few days.

| Part of the attraction of Chiloe is the wealth of mystery and folkloric legenda and myths that permeate the misty, foggy reaches of forest and remote beaches. The mythical lore results from the cultural mix of ethnic beliefs and the Catholic faith brought to the island. There are ghost ships, goblins and witches who dine on recently interred corpses. Two popular legends are the beatufiul nude mermaid, La Pincoya who lures men to the sea, and a short, squat ugly troll, El Trauco, who lures women to the forest and impregnates them. It's a handy explanation, with no questions asked, for men coming back from the sea... . Isolated for many years, the residents, called Chilotes, developed self-reliance, but many have left the island for a more secure lifestyle. Those remaining continue their traditions and are slowly building up a tourist infrastucture. Chiloe is becoming an increasingly popular destination for walking, biking, fishing, paddling and birding.

Défilé de gauchos
carnavals argentine chili

Buenos Aires - Murgas
carnavals argentine chili

| Few days.

| Buenos Aires is a vibrant city, renowned for its marvelous art and culture, welcoming people, great food and wines, and lively nightlife. Murgas and carnival are the artistic expressions of the marginal neighborhoods, their songs and urban folk customs. The lyrics of these songs are called "criticas", and combine the social denunciation with humor and dancing. What identifies the "murga porteña" from others is their costumes (frock coat, gloves, top hat, and stick), the drums with cymbals, and the various traditional rhythms used to differentiate every neighborhood.

Borispatagonia

Patagonia in all seasons menu. For example, according to the climate, from Bariloche, in Patagonia Argentina, it is possible to go to Puerto Montt, in Chile, crossing successively three lakes by boat, as did the Jesuits and the first German settlers. I offer a tour that leads to the Pacific Ocean. It is quite long, but the beauty of the sites - forests, volcanoes and crystalline lakes - is such that it is worth to be carried. The Argentine side, cross the west arm of Nahuel Huapi and Lake Puerto Alegre and, the chilen side, Lake Todos los Santos. Moving from one lake to another by bus. This tour is feasible in all seasons, but in winter, it takes two days to reach Puerto Montt, stopping for one night at Peulla. We returned to Bariloche by air or by the same way, after a night in Puerto Montt. Borispatagonia is also responsible for visas to go to Chile and to book hotels. In Patagonia, winter and summer are tourist seasons. In summer, besides explore the surrounding, many activities are available: climbing, torrent fishing, sailing, horseback riding, hiking, rides, visits to Aciendas... In winter, the main activity is, of course, skiing, especially in July and August on the side of the Andes, but not only: snowshoe hikes, thematic tours, many walks to admire the beauty of Patagonia Argentina and Chile in this season, due a unique light, the warmth of the people of Patagonia... Just to talk about, I get goose bumps!
